Sustainable online shopping is becoming a more significant and popular trend because not only is consumer awareness growing, but so are their demands on businesses.

Online shopping has a lower carbon footprint than traveling to a stationary store for the same product. However, the emissions that e-commerce generates are still very high. We already know that the greenhouse gas emissions of online shopping can be reduced, and emissions that cannot be avoided can be zeroed out.

Sustainable online shopping is becoming a more significant and popular trend because not only is consumer awareness growing, but so are their demands on businesses.

As a startup helping to fight climate change, we are pleased to see that the number of sustainable online stores continues to grow.

What stores are already taking steps to offset their carbon and environmental footprint? We checked it out – ranking of the top 10 online sustainable online shops in 2023 is here

Also, have a look at the list of the ten most sustainable stores of 2022 – it’s still relevant!

1. Biome

An Australian brand Biome was created in 2003 based on a vision to be a part of the movement creating a safe, healthy environment for us and future generations by providing a marketplace for hundreds of ethical producers. Their products are 100% cruelty-free, palm oil free, and free from synthetic preservatives. All products must be made from ingredients grown and manufactured sustainably, locally, and biodegradable (or possibly recycled). Moreover, all parcels are shipped plastic-free, and 100% of their shipping is compensated by buying carbon offsets.

Biome is Australia’s first B Corp certified retailer and the first Palm Oil Investigations certified palm oil-free retail store. The brand is also committed to being Net Zero by 2030 on the world stage at the UN Climate Change Conference.

2. Green Eco Dream

Looking for a sustainable marketplace in the USA? Your struggle ends up here. Green Eco Dream is where you’ll find home goods, health & beauty supplies, and many “on the go” products. Everything the brand does is based on two questions: How does this benefit customers? How does it affect our Planet? That is why their products are all-natural, shipping is 100% plastic-free, and their members support many eco-initiatives like 1% for the Planet, Clean Miami Beach, Certified Carbon Neutral Company, and Plastic Pollution Coalition. They’re also certified by Green America.

3. Ten thousand villages

Ten thousand villages is a market-to-market movement that addresses economic injustice. The platform offers a wide range of ethically-sourced handcrafted objects. Their business is based on the premise that people and the planet should always be first. Their mission is to break the cycle of generational poverty and ignite social change. You’ll find here accessories, home and outdoor decor, many spa products, and beautiful gifts for your friends and family!

4. MadeTrade

Looking for ethical and sustainable home decor, furniture, shoes, and clothing? Made Trade brings the best ethically made and sustainably-sourced goods to one place. The company is also a woman-owned, family-run small business. In 2021, Made Trade offset 100% of its carbon emissions, including the carbon footprint of all products ordered so far and shipping, thus proudly turning into a certified carbon-neutral company.

5. Shades of Green

Shades of Green is a sustainable home shopping platform. They educate consumers on the eco-friendly practices and offer quality products. The whole business idea is to engage in sustainable community building and conscious consumerism. The products that meet brand eco-evaluation are scored in the five green shades category criteria. The evaluation considers sourcing, manufacturing, shipping & packaging, health & performance, and lifecycle.

6. Urban Kissed

It’s a Switzerland-based, sustainable fashion, slow & ethical marketplace. Brands on the platform undergo evaluation and become included in the Slow & Ethical Index (consists of 15 standards along the supply chain to provide transparency to customers). Except for the wide range of high-quality, timeless fashion pieces, Urban Kissed also offers a free carbon offset for worldwide deliveries thanks to partnerships with Tree-Nation: for any sale made on their platform, they plant one tree within their company forest in Madagascar. The shop also compensates 100% of its website’s CO2 emissions.

7. Ethical Superstore

Ethical Superstore helps customers in conscious buying – they bring together products from all over the world that hold ethical credentials. The platform aims to help farmers and small businesses trade goods, guaranteeing fair prices at every stage of the supply chain so the clients can feel good about their purchases and ensure that no one has been exploited in the production process. Also, the price policy is helping to alleviate poverty. Most of their products hold certificates from The Soil Association, the Fairtrade Labeling Organization, and the Energy Savings Trust. Moreover, with every checkout, clients can donate to one of the charities they support (including planting trees).

8. Etee

You’re from Canada and wish you lived a more simple, more sustainable, and more eco-friendly life? Etee will help you achieve this! Inspiring changes in everyday habits, Etee present a whole spectrum of solutions for consumer goods and households in plastic-free packaging, in a way that is friendly to people and the planet. All used materials and products are 100% biodegradable and naturally derived.

9. The sustainable Shop

The Sustainable Shop founders truly believe in a future world where buying sustainable products becomes the norm rather than exception. We share this belief with them: every consumer and every single person in the world has the power to make a positive change (whether contributing to reducing the amount of plastic in the environment or global carbon emissions).

If you’re living in the UK and looking for products better for the environment, in a better quality than their cheaper, disposable alternatives – this is the right place for you!

10. TerGo’s offset shop

In 2023 we still think there is no easier way to offset your emissions than shopping for offsets at TerGo’s online store! With us, you can offset the emissions you cannot avoid (for example, coming from online shopping) with our tailor-made offsetting packages or monthly subscriptions.
Every offset package contributes to developing TerGo’s agroforestry projects, thus planting trees, providing work for local people, and expanding our mission of saving and restoring biodiversity. Live better, plant the trees for your orders and shipments with TerGo, and support the agroforestry project run by our team in Belize. For a better future of our Planet!
