WHAT IS THE BELIZE PROJECT ABOUT?

Planting trees is one of the most ecological ways of carbon sequestration.

Tree-planting contributes to restoring biodiversity and improves soil, air, and water conditions. It also benefits
the local communities. We run the Belize project on our own land, thus securing its duration for decades.

  • We know our trees

    At TerGo, we plant the trees ourselves. By choosing our highest quality offsets, you support the project directly, skipping brokers or third-party resellers.

    We have carefully selected the perfect location, following the climate justice principle. TerGo’s Belize team works on the ground, hand in hand with our local farmers, ensuring the highest standards.

  • Social benefits

    10% of all the funds received support maintenance of the program, with 90% going directly to the agroforestry farm.

    We reward our farmers with very fair wages, along with free board and lodging in a house built for them on the land.

    Lastly, the farmers and the local community receive the entire harvest. Whether they sell the fruit or use it in other ways, it is up to them.

  • Supporting biodiversity

    Our plantings include fruit, timber and leguminous trees. The symbiotic relation of our plants improves soil fertility, thus promoting greater carbon storage below ground.

  • Highest standards

    We follow ISO 14064-3:2019, and Greenhouse gases – Part 3: Specification with guidance for the verification and validation of greenhouse gas statements.

    Our project is carried out in accordance with ISO 14064-2:2019, Greenhouse gases — Part 2: Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements.TerGo supports the TerGo Foundation and carries out its statutory activities. TerGo’s plantings are carried out in accordance with the International Forestry Carbon Standard established by environmental experts cooperating with the TerGo Foundation.

How we work

  • 1. Cooperation with
    the local community

    Together we find land that can be saved and converted to
    an agroforestry farm.

  • 2. Planting the
    trees

    We carefully plan a versatile planting profile to optimize CO2 sequestration, along with soil conditions and natural pest resistance.

  • 3. Attentive maintenance

    We ensure the best conditions for our forest’s growth through scheduled composting, elimination of inorganic fertilisers, and minimised interference.

Where do we plant your trees?

We work with our Belizean partners to find land that is currently unused, underused,
or would otherwise be turned to pastureland.

  • Avocado

    Avocados need only three years to start giving fruit.

    They also last long! Hass avocado trees are said to live up to 200-400 years.

  • Mango

    Mango captures nearly 5 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere every month!

    Their broad leaves absorb as much CO2 as packing and transporting
    the ripe fruit emits.

  • Soursop

    You can find them in our Eco-Planet Savior package.

    This prickly green fruit has a creamy texture and a strong flavor similar to pineapple or strawberry.

Planting methodology

TerGo’s planting approach optimizes CO2 intake, soil conditions, and trees’ growth, providing excellent carbon storage in the plants and below ground.

Step 1: Planting inga leguminous trees in rows, leaving space for timber and fruit trees in between.

Step 2: Planting fruit trees in rows in the middle.

Step 3: Planting madre-de-cacao on the edges of the plot; they act as wind-breakers and protect borders.
